Happy Birthday to You!

December snuck up on me this year and I was asking myself the same thing I always do in early December...what should I get my husband for his birthday??  Maybe a new suit and tie for his new job…naaa too ordinary.  Maybe some techy gadget…he likes those!  Naaaa—I am about 5 years behind on knowing what is cutting edge.  Since he had complained for years that I never paint him anything, I thought what better than a custom painting!!

Sydney was the perfect subject, she is our precious corgi and the object of much of Zach’s affection!  She was so good as I made her pose for about an hour to get just the right shot.  I have always liked the style of Blue Dog Art so I used a similar technique with acrylic on canvas.

I had the restaurant hang the painting on the wall at our table.  The Parker House in Jackson, MS is known for displaying the work of local artists on the walls so it fit right in.  Within minutes of being seated he realized that was our Sydney!

It was an awesome moment when he put it all together.  He was thrilled that he got a painting (finally!!) and he was so proud of it too!  What a great night! God blessed me with a gift that I can use to bring joy into people’s lives!  I hope my life is full of nights like this one!

Pick On Somebody Your Own Size!

I am always passionate about the pieces I create, but never as much as I was this time. My Papa had become very ill and as I prepared for what would end up being my last trip home to Texas to visit him I decided I wanted to draw him with his sidekick, Holly. 

 

The day before leaving I got out my pencil and locked myself up in the study until I was done.  When I took him the drawing he was barely able to open his eyes.  We weren’t sure he was able to comprehend what it was until we reached down to take it from him and with a firm grip he held onto this picture.  When he built up a little more energy later, he opened his eyes just enough to look at the drawing of him and his dog...

 

I think this ranked up there as one of the greatest moments of my life and a blessing as an artist. 

 

 

Two weeks later it was the focal point next to his flag-draped casket.  My favorite memories are of him drawing me pictures of Popeye and telling me to go “Pick on somebody your own size”.  He was a great man…and quite the artist too!!
